Bloomington, Indiana Restaurant and Food Guide

Recommendations for dining and (and food in general) in Bloomingon, Indiana

Siam House

Maybe one of the few Bloomington restaurants to dodge the inevitable downward spiral into crappiness which befalls most promising restaurants, (for some reason, this is especially true for ethnic ones--RIP Burmese Gems). I go for the Tom Yum soup and my wife for the red curries. They do a nice job with everything we've tried. I love the iced tea (Jasmine) and, for appetizers, the spring rolls and dumplings are nice. They offer tofu and TVP alternatives to meat for most dishes. Best of all, they have a daily lunch buffet with meat and vegetarian dishes for a reasonable price ($6.99 last time we went). Consistently good but with a seasonal/bi-seasonal wait-staff turnover. Usually not a big problem though we've had some trying waits on slow servers.

Red Sea (just down the street from Siam House) has an empty and sparse atmosphere, but significantly better and more authentic Thai food (I am Thai/American).

Esan Thai by the public library is the best compromise, offering good close to authentic food, but providing a fun and lively atmosphere.

OK, the service is slow - but it's worth the wait! I have friends and family who come from out-of-state just to eat here! Even my 1-year-old loves it! If money is a concern, you can order a dinner portion and split it - you'll still get plenty of food and you won't have to fight your spouse, or roommate, over the leftovers tomorrow! Try the curry #22 or stir-fry #36 to start.
